Pyongyang, June 23 (KCNA) — Nyongbyon in North Phyongan Province of the DPRK has been known as one of the leading silk production bases in the country from olden times. Silk of Nyongbyon has been famous for its high quality and output. Nyongbyon, producer of a high-quality silk called Mobondan and manufacturer of a doubling machine, contributed to increasing the silk production of the country. After the national liberation from the Japanese colonial rule (August 15, 1945), President Kim Il Sung instructed to build a silk production base in Nyongbyon. And in mid-June 1954, he personally saw silk fabrics made by the Korean technicians on a trial basis. After receiving a report that some of silk fabrics had not yet been named, he named a silk fabric patterned with azaleas “Yaksandan”, saying that there is Yaksandongdae, a beauty spot with many azaleas, in Nyongbyon. He also named a silk fabric with a gentle wave pattern “Kuryongdan” after the name of the Kuryong River flowing down Yaksandongdae. Nyongbyon County is still famous for its silk along with the song “A Girl Weaving Silk of Nyongbyon”. The technology of weaving silk originated in Nyongbyon, a traditional handicraft, was registered as a part of the local intangible cultural heritage in October 2018.
